In mid-November, we visited the 32nd edition of SPS – Smart Production Solutions in Nuremberg, where the top of the automation industry gathered. Over 1,200 exhibitors from all over the world presented themselves in 16 exhibition halls with approximately 120,000 m² of exhibition space. Once again, the top event offered a wealth of information on the latest topics in automation; in addition to classic automation topics such as control technology, drive technology and sensor technology, which are of great interest, it was quite obvious how the area of software and IT in production is gaining in importance. Some exhibitors explicitly pointed out that automation functions will in future be mapped directly on the machine, at the network edge or even in the cloud. This development has gained momentum, for example, thanks to our long-standing partner Siemens AG. In the spring, Siemens introduced memory-programmable control as a purely cloud-based software variant. Along with this, the topics of artificial intelligence and IT security are also coming to the fore in the automation world, which is also reflected in the product offering on site.
The Technology Stage programme was broadcast live at the fair via the digital “SPS on air”, where the main topics of panel discussions and presentations were digital transformation/industry 4.0, industrial communication, safety and security, intelligent control concepts and data-driven visualisation, innovations in sensors, drives and sustainability through automation. In Hall 6, we had the opportunity to visit the well-established joint stand “Automation meets IT”, where around 24 exhibitors offered a comprehensive overview of topic areas such as IT-management for manufacturing, cloud and edge computing-based solutions and services, security measures for manufacturing, IoT and AI-based solutions or Open Source.
